Een discipel van Christus te zijn betekent Christus te aanvaarden als
leermeester, als geestelijk leider, en in zijn voetsporen te volgen. De
leringen van Christus en zijn voorbeeld staan ons door de schriften ter
beschikking: in de verhalen van Christus' zending zoals opgetekend in
het Nieuwe Testament, in het Boek van Mormon, en in de openbaringen in
deze 'laatste dagen' waardoor Christus tot ons spreekt. En bovenal onderwijst
Christus ons door de gave van de Heilige Geest, ofwel de Trooster, die
hij zendt om zijn discipelen te onderwijzen wanneer hij zelf niet lichamelijk
bij hen aanwezig kan zijn (Johannes 14:25-26; 2 Nephi
32:3, 5).
Heiligen der Laatste Dagen zijn opgedragen het voorbeeld van Jezus te
volgen; te zijn zoals hij, en de werken te doen die we hem hebben zien
doen (3 Nephi 18:16; 27:21, 27). De zending
van Jezus was er een van genezing en zegening (1 Nephi
11:31; Mosiah 3:5-6; 3 Nephi 17). Hij trok als weldoener door het
land (Handelingen 10:38). Hij voedde de hongerigen,
troostte de bedroefden, verwierp onrechtvaardigheid en hypocrisie, en
werkte ondanks maatschappelijke barrières aan gemeenschappen waar iedereen
welkom was. HLD leiders en leraren vatten Christelijk discipelschap samen
als integriteit, diensbaarheid, en medelijden, door Jezus zelf samengevat
als liefde voor God en de naaste (Mattheus 22:37-40).
Liefde is de eigenschap waar het om gaat voor een waarlijk volgeling van
Christus. We worden dan ook vermaand met alle kracht van ons hart te bidden
dat God ons zal vervullen met Christeijke liefde (Moroni
7:48; Johannes 13:34-35).
